NO sooner has Reese Witherspoon put out one legal matter than another has apparently arrived at her door. The Oscar winner, who owns fashion label Draper James, has been accused of copying a design from jeweller Jordann Weingartner`s I Love Jewellery line and is being sued for $5 million as a result.
The item that has proven contentious is a Draper James tote bag that features a transfer depicting a flower with a calligraphic "D" in the middle. Weingartner claims that Witherspoon has copied the design from items in her "Magnolia" collection.
"I drew the design for my Magnolia Collection back in 2008," Weingartner told Page Six. "The flower isn`t a traditional magnolia flower, it is my artistic take on a magnolia. My design actually looks nothing like a magnolia and Draper James not only took the design, but also decided to call it a magnolia."
The I Love Jewellery designer claims that she knows Witherspoon was aware of the design as she was sent a necklace as a gift. She also states that the actress initially ignored her attempts to settle the case out of court, prompting the legal action.
"They basically ignored us. So, we`re ready to fight," she said. Witherspoon`s representatives have not publicly commented on the case, which is said to have been filed in federal court in West Palm Beach.
Witherspoon was recently on the other side of a legal case that she brought against San Diego-based jewellery company Sears in 2013 for using her image without her permission. Last month the case was settled out of court.
